The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY) aims to become carbon neutral by 2025. The Student Union has set as its target a 7.5-percent reduction in the overall consumption of energy by properties owned by it. As part of the roadmap toward this goal, JYY chose the Themo Energy Saving Service for the optimization of electric underfloor heating in 2021.

As operators in the Finnish property sector are searching for effective ways to save energy, the Themo Energy Saving Service plays an important role. In rental properties, which is also the field of activity of JYY, property owners using the service can save approximately 50% on the cost of underfloor heating. At the same time, the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the users are also significantly reduced.

Themo Energy Saing Service allows for a substantial leap in responsibility

In the summer of 2021, JYY connected 597 apartments to the Themo Energy Saving Service. Over the next six months, renovated properties were added to the service. From the summer of 2022, Themo Energy Saving Service will be used in 891 JYY apartments to save energy. Based on the results of the initial pilot period, JYY seeks a reduction of as much as 600 000 kWh in annual consumption of electricity through the Themo Energy Saving Service.

"Themo offers us an excellent opportunity to control and optimize underfloor heating in our rental apartments. We have been searching for agile ways to reduce our energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The Themo Energy Saving Service provides excellent support for our ambitious responsibility targets."

Themo Energy Saving Service offers a solution to a problem occupying the minds of property business professionals

Effective and centralized control of electric underfloor heating has traditionally been impossible. Especially in rental apartments, the underfloor heating is often set to an unnecessarily high temperature. Apartments, where the thermostat has been turned completely off for an extended period, can also prove problematic. With the portal included as part of the Themo Energy Saving Service, controlling the heating in rooms with underfloor heating becomes substantially easier.

“Themo offers a solution to a significant problem that has so far been unsolvable. The Themo system enables us to control each area with underfloor heating separately at our discretion. This eliminates excessive heating and also allows us to ensure that underfloor heating is activated in each bathroom in the first place. A brilliant service and an excellent tool.”

In addition to JYY, the Themo Energy Saving Service is used to optimize underfloor heating by the Helsinki City Housing Company; TVT Asunnot Oy, a rental housing provider owned by the City of Turku; Niiralan Kulma, a rental housing provider owned by the City of Kuopio; Kuopio Student Housing Company; and Pajulahti Sports Institute.

All Themo customers are united in their pursuit of responsible and smart consumption of electricity. Property companies can try out the service with a free pilot period that provides a reliable assessment of the energy-saving potential of the properties and the ecological impact of the service.
